Link Tracking
Understand how Track Link captures and presents click data.
How It Works
When someone clicks your tracked link, they're briefly redirected through our servers before reaching the destination URL. During this redirect (typically under 50ms), we capture:
- Timestamp of the click
- Geographic location (country, city)
- Device type (desktop, mobile, tablet)
- Browser and operating system
- Referrer URL
- UTM parameters
Unique vs Total Clicks
Total clicks counts every click on your link, including repeat clicks from the same person.
Unique clicks counts individual visitors, using a combination of IP address and device fingerprinting to identify repeat visitors.
Geographic Data
We determine location from the visitor's IP address. This provides:
- Country and country code
- City name
- Approximate coordinates (for map display)
Note: IP addresses are used for geolocation only and are not stored.
Device & Browser Data
We parse the user agent string to identify:
- Device type: Desktop, Mobile, or Tablet
- Browser: Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, etc.
- Operating System: Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux
Referrer Tracking
The referrer tells you where the click came from:
- Direct: User typed the URL or used a bookmark
- Social media: twitter.com, facebook.com, linkedin.com
- Search engines: google.com, bing.com
- Email: Various email client domains
- Other websites: Any referring domain
