Instagram Story link clicks
how many, when and from where.

Instagram doesn't tell you who tapped the link in your Story, and no outside tool can either. What you can get is a clean count for each Story, the time of every tap, roughly where it came from and what device it was on.

Quick answer

You can't see who clicked a link on your Instagram Story. The viewer list shows who watched the Story, and Story insights on a professional account show link taps as a number, not as names. To see more, put a tracked link in the link sticker: each tap is recorded with its time, approximate country and city, and device, and a utm_content tag per Story lets you compare Stories side by side.

Neither one shows who tapped: no names, handles or IP addresses.

Story insights give one tap count per Story; a tracked link in the sticker adds clicks per Story with the time, city and device of each tap, and neither shows who tapped.

What Instagram shows, and what it doesn't

Two different things get mixed up here. The Story's viewer list shows who watched it. Story insights, available on professional (creator and business) accounts, show how many times the link was tapped. Instagram never joins the two, so there is no list of which viewers tapped the link.

That holds for every outside tool too, including this one. Instagram doesn't hand out who tapped, so be wary of any app that promises names, especially one that asks for your Instagram password.

What a tracked link can add is detail about each tap, a way to compare one Story with another, and a record that doesn't depend on the Story still being up.

What a tracked link records for each tap

Put a tracked link in the link sticker instead of the plain URL. Each tap passes through it on the way to your page and is recorded with:

  • The exact time, so you can see how taps spread across the Story's 24 hours.
  • Approximate country, region and city, from the visitor's network.
  • Device type, operating system and browser.
  • The browser's language, and the referrer when Instagram passes one.
  • Your UTM tags, so each Story can be told apart.
  • Total taps and unique visitors, side by side.
  • Sign-ups or sales on your site, if you add conversion tracking.

Compare Stories with one tag each

Story insights show taps one Story at a time, inside Instagram. To compare Stories in one place, reuse a single tracked link and give each Story its own utm_content value. The link's report then splits clicks by Story.

Tags don't use up links, so a week of Stories can share one. If you'd rather keep a separate link per Story, that works too; each one counts toward your link allowance. For the full Instagram tag convention across bio, Reels and ads, see how to track an Instagram link.

After the Story disappears

A Story leaves your followers' tray after 24 hours, but a tracked link keeps working. Save the Story to a Highlight and it stays on your profile, where its link can keep getting taps. Reuse the same link in a post, a DM or your bio and those clicks land in the same report.

Give each reused copy a different utm_medium, such as bio or dm, and the Story's own numbers stay separate from the rest.

Why the counts won't match Instagram's

Instagram counts a tap on the sticker. A tracked link counts a visit that reaches the link. Someone who taps and backs out before the page loads, or whose connection drops, can show up in one count and not the other. Track Link also leaves out known bots and link-preview crawlers.

A small gap between the two numbers is normal. If the gap is large, check that the sticker holds the tracked link and not the plain URL.

How to track clicks on an Instagram Story link

  1. 1Create a free Track Link account with Google or Microsoft sign-in (no credit card), then create a tracked link to the page the Story should open.
  2. 2Add tags for this Story: ?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=story&utm_content= followed by a short name for the Story.
  3. 3Add a link sticker to your Story and paste the tagged link into it.
  4. 4Post the Story, then open the link's analytics to see taps by Story, hour, country and device, next to the tap count in your Story insights.

What Story link tracking can't do

  • Name who tapped. Neither Instagram's insights nor any other tool can, and Track Link never shows names, handles or IP addresses.
  • Pin a tap to an exact place. Location comes from the visitor's network, so a phone on mobile data can show up in a nearby city.
  • Free links show a 2-second branded notice before opening the page. Starter and above redirect instantly.
  • Keep history forever on Free. The free plan includes 7 days data retention and 1,500 clicks per month; Starter has 6 months data retention.

Questions people ask

Can you see who clicked the link on your Instagram Story?

No. The viewer list shows who watched the Story, and Story insights show link taps as a count. Instagram doesn't connect the two, and no outside app can either. A tracked link shows when each tap happened, roughly where and on what device, but not who it was.

How do I know if someone clicked the link on my Story?

Check the link taps in your Story insights, or put a tracked link in the sticker and watch clicks arrive with their time and location. If you need to know whether one particular person opened something, a Story is the wrong channel: send it to them directly as its own link. Even then a click shows the link was opened, not by whom, since links can be forwarded.

How do I see how many people clicked my Story link?

Story insights on a professional account show the number of link taps. A tracked link shows total clicks and unique visitors, so repeated taps from one person don't inflate the count.

Do Story link clicks still count after 24 hours?

Yes, if anyone still reaches the link. A Story saved to a Highlight stays on your profile, and a tracked link records every click on it for as long as the link exists, wherever it is shared.

Do I need a professional account?

For Instagram's own Story insights, yes. For a tracked link, no: it works on any account that can add a link to a Story, because the counting happens on the link, not inside Instagram.

Why does my tracked link show fewer clicks than Instagram?

Instagram counts the tap; the tracked link counts the visit that reaches it. Taps that are cancelled before the page loads, and known bots, are not counted on the link. A small gap is normal.

Can I use the same link in several Stories?

Yes. Give each Story a different utm_content tag and the link's report splits clicks by Story, without using up a new link each time.
