How tracked QR codes work

Three steps from sign-up to tracked scans. No code, no integrations, no setup beyond picking a destination URL.

1

Create a tracked QR

Sign up free, paste your destination URL, customize the QR design (colors, logo, dot style). The QR encodes a Track Link short URL — that's the redirect layer that makes tracking possible.

2

Print, share, embed

Download the QR as PNG/JPG/WebP/SVG up to 2048×2048. Use it on flyers, packaging, business cards, slide decks, anywhere. The same image works for unlimited scans.

3

Watch real scans roll in

Every scan logs to your dashboard within seconds. See country, city, device, OS, browser, timestamp. Compare scans across QR codes, segment by date, change destination URL anytime.

Why we offer it free

The reasonable suspicion when something says "free".

We don't sell scan data

Your QR scan logs stay in your account. We don't aggregate them into a panel and sell to advertisers. No third-party pixels run on the redirect. The business model is paid plans for high-volume users — not data brokerage.

Free is part of distribution

Free users tell other people. A side-project tracker that your colleague used last quarter is more memorable than a 14-day trial that forced a card. We invest in free because it pays back as growth, not because we plan to extract later.

Free plan, examined

Is QR code tracking actually free, or is this a 14-day trial?
Actually free, with no credit card required and no time limit. The free plan covers 10 active QR codes and 2,500 scans per month. Every scan is logged with country, device, browser, OS, and timestamp — the same data the paid plan shows, just with a soft cap on volume. No card on file means we cannot accidentally bill you. The plan resets monthly. If you grow past 2,500 scans/month, you upgrade or wait for the reset.
What happens at scan 2,501 on the free plan?
The QR keeps redirecting and the user keeps reaching your destination. We don't break the user experience. What stops is logging — clicks beyond the monthly cap aren't recorded for analytics. The next month, logging resumes. If you're running a printed campaign and expect to overshoot, upgrade to the paid plan once before launch and the cap is removed; the per-month cost is lower than what most agencies charge to track a single campaign.
Do I lose my QR codes if I'm inactive for a while?
No. Free accounts don't expire. Your QR codes keep redirecting and keep tracking on resumption — even if you don't log in for months. The data we have already collected is preserved within the data retention window of your plan (free is the most recent month of click history; paid plans retain longer).
Can I customize the QR design on the free plan?
Yes. The QR editor on the free plan supports custom foreground and background colors, three dot styles (squares, dots, fluid), eye-corner shapes, error correction levels, and a logo image overlay (PNG/JPG/SVG/WebP up to 1MB). Eight design templates are included. The output downloads as PNG, JPG, WebP, or SVG at sizes up to 2048×2048. There is no watermark on free QR codes.
How does this differ from a free QR generator like QR Code Monkey?
Generic QR generators stop the moment you click download. Track Link generates the same image, plus continues logging every scan that hits the redirect. After your QR is in the wild, generic generators can't tell you that 21.9% of scans came from Android, or that your peak hour is 12:00 UTC, or that your top country is the United States (18.6%) or United Kingdom (15.0%). Track Link can. The image is the small part — the analytics are the actual product.
Will tracked QR codes get flagged as spam by my customers' phones?
No. Native iOS and Android cameras follow the redirect and load the destination silently — most users never see the gettrack.link intermediate hop. To be extra safe, you can connect a custom domain on the paid plan so the redirect runs through your own URL (e.g. links.yourbrand.com) instead of gettrack.link. Custom domains use Cloudflare custom hostnames with automatic SSL.
Is the data accurate? Some QR trackers count bot scans.
We exclude obvious bot user agents (Googlebot, Bingbot, link-checkers, monitoring services) at the redirect layer, before the click hits your stats. The clicks you see are real human scans. We mark each click as 'unique' or 'repeat' based on a privacy-safe fingerprint, so you can separate genuinely new scans from someone scanning the same QR three times in two minutes (which happens more than you'd think during demos).
Can I export the scan data?
Yes. The dashboard exposes per-link click logs and aggregate analytics, and the paid plan adds CSV export for the full click history. Public stats pages (one share-link per QR) let you give a client read-only access without an account. Conversion tracking — for tying scans to downstream events like form submissions or purchases — is also available via a JavaScript snippet on your destination page.
