Link rotator
one link, many destinations.
Share one short link and let each click land on one of up to 10 destinations, in the proportions you choose. Every destination gets its own clicks, conversions and revenue, so the rotation tells you which one to keep.
Quick answer
A link rotator is a short link that forwards each visitor to one of several destination URLs. On Track Link you add up to 10 destinations to a link and give each a weight; every click picks one at random in proportion to those weights, inside a single server redirect. The link's results table then counts clicks, conversions and revenue per destination.
| Destination | Clicks | Conv. | Revenue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Offer A Winner | 612 | 41 | $1,230 |
| Offer B | 305 | 12 | $360 |
| Offer C | 98 | 2 | $60 |
What people rotate links for
The common thread is one link that has to stay the same while what sits behind it is shared out. A link printed on a flyer, pinned in a bio or pasted into an ad cannot change every time you want to try something, so the rotation does the changing.
- Testing two landing pages against each other with real traffic, not a guess.
- Sending affiliate traffic to two or three offers and keeping the one that pays.
- Sharing leads across sales reps, each with their own booking page or chat number. The WhatsApp link rotator covers the chat version.
- Spreading load across mirror pages, sign-up forms or event registration pages.
- Easing a new page in: 10% of visitors to the new version, 90% to the one you trust.
How the split works
Each destination has a weight. A click picks a destination at random, with the odds set by the weights, so a 3:1 weighting sends roughly three visitors to the first page for every one to the second. Equal weights give an even split.
The pick happens per click, on the server, before the redirect. There is no script on the visitor's device and no page in between: it is the same single redirect a plain short link makes, just aimed at a different place each time.
Because each click is drawn fresh, small numbers drift. Ten clicks on a 50/50 link can easily come out 7 to 3; a few hundred will sit close to the weights. Read the split once traffic has built up, not after the first morning.
| Destination | Weight | Share of clicks |
|---|---|---|
yoursite.com/offer-a | 3 | about 75% |
yoursite.com/offer-b | 1 | about 25% |
Results per destination
The link's page shows a results table with one row per destination: clicks, conversions and revenue. Conversions come from conversion tracking, which ties a sale or sign-up back to the exact click, and therefore to the destination that click was sent to.
The table only names a winner once a destination has at least 30 clicks and one conversion. Calling a result on nine clicks would be noise dressed up as a decision.
If you remove a destination, its past traffic stays in the table, marked as no longer in the rotation, so the history of the test is not lost.
Rotation alongside other link rules
Rotation combines with the other rules on a link. A schedule, country rules and a password are all checked before it. Device targeting comes next: a phone that matches a device rule goes straight to that rule's destination, and everyone else falls through to the rotation.
Every destination you add is checked against Google Web Risk before it is saved, the same check the main destination gets, so a rotation cannot be used to slip a known phishing page behind a clean link.
How to set up a link rotator
- 1Create a tracked link, or open one you already share.
- 2Open the Rules tab and add a rotation. Paste each destination URL and give it a label you will recognise in the results.
- 3Set the weights. Equal weights split evenly; raise one weight to send it a bigger share.
- 4Share the link as usual. Check the results table once each destination has a few hundred clicks.
What a rotator does not do
- It is not round-robin. Destinations are drawn at random by weight, so the order of visitors is not fixed and short runs can lean one way.
- It is not sticky. A visitor who clicks twice can land on a different destination the second time.
- A link rotates between at most 10 destinations.
Questions people ask
What is a link rotator?
A single short link that sends each visitor to one of several destination URLs. You decide the destinations and how much traffic each gets, and the link stays the same wherever you have shared it.
Is the rotation random or in order?
Random, weighted. Each click picks a destination with odds set by the weights. Over many clicks the split matches the weights; over a handful it can drift.
How many destinations can one link rotate between?
Up to 10. Each can have its own label and weight.
Can I use it to A/B test landing pages?
Yes. Put each page in the rotation with equal weights, add conversion tracking to the pages, and the results table compares clicks, conversions and revenue per page.
Does the same visitor always see the same page?
No. Each click is drawn on its own, so a returning visitor can land on a different destination. If you need one person to stay on one page, give them a separate link.
Can I rotate affiliate offers?
Yes, as long as the networks allow their links to sit behind a redirect. Most do. Check each network's terms, and add their postback so sales show up against the right destination.
Is there a free link rotator?
Rotation is part of Pro ($9.99/mo) and above. Every plan, including Free, records clicks on the link itself, so you can see the traffic before you start splitting it.
